The artist, Joan Elan Davis, has been painting and studying nature for over ten years. Different areas of San Francisco have provided her with a varied visual vocabulary. The Presidio, Seacliff and the shores of San Francisco's beaches have provided an infinite palette of colors, shapes and forms that have led to a refined development in her work.
Recently, the artist studied nature and painting during an intensive stay at Anderson Ranch, just north of Aspen, Colorado, a residency and workshop environment which attracts top artists from around the world. This collection of paintings, Natural Notations, resulted from that experience and continues to develop in her San Francisco studio.
Davis works from tiny elements taken directly from nature, studying the patterns inside a plant, a seed or the surface of a stone and expands the line, shape and form of the object to grand proportions. Patterns that arise in nature are simplified into a single line or shape in Davis' work and placed in a rainbow of color that creates an environment rich with energy and depth. Through Davis' expressive natural notation, the plant, shell or flora is left behind and an imaginative, timeless image is recorded. |
